Jimmy O'Connor R.I.P.

Our esteemed member, Mr James (Jimmy) O'Connor sadly passed away on 3rd March 2011. Jimmy, for many years a prominent figure in the business life of Athlone was Hon President of the Athlone Architectural Heritage Group. We were indeed very privileged to have Jimmy as a member and his passion for the preservation of Athlone's heritage (such as the Fr Mathew Hall) was an inspiration to us all.

Following his concelebrated funeral Mass in Sts. Peter & Pauls Church on Monday, 7th of March, Jimmy was laid to rest in Cornamagh Cemetery. Ar dheis de go raibh an anam.


Remembering Jimmy

The Athlone Architectural Heritage Group held an 'Old Athlone' exhibition in St. Mary's Hall on Saturday 22nd August 2009 as part of their participation in National Heritage Week. The exhibition comprised of photos and memorabilia of Athlone's past history, architecture and famous personalities. The exhibition at which the newly reformed Athlone Pipe Band performed was officially opened by local historian and President of the Athlone Architectural Heritage Group, Mr. Jimmy O'Connor. The Group's website, www.athloneheritage.com was also officially launched at the event.
